Abstract

The increasing intensity of internet use among Generation Z has provided numerous benefits in daily life but has also heightened the risk of Problematic Internet Use (PIU). One psychological factor believed to protect individuals from developing PIU is self-control. Although previous studies have consistently reported an association between self-control and PIU, most have focused solely on overall PIU scores without examining its specific dimensions. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between self-control and Problematic Internet Use, including its three dimensions—Obsession, neglect, and control disorder—among Generation Z in Bekasi City, Indonesia. A quantitative correlational survey design was employed. A total of 220 active internet users from Generation Z were recruited using a snowball sampling technique. Self-control was measured using the Indonesian Version of the Self-Control Scale, while PIU was assessed using the Problematic Internet Use Questionnaire Short Form (PIUQ-SF-6). Spearman's rank correlation was applied because the data were not normally distributed. The findings revealed a significant negative correlation between self-control and overall PIU (ρ = -0.540, p < .001). Further analyses indicated significant negative correlations between self-control and the dimensions of Obsession (ρ = -0.470, p < .001), neglect (ρ = -0.580, p < .001), and control disorder (ρ = -0.380, p < .001). Among the three dimensions, neglect demonstrated the strongest association with self-control. These findings suggest that higher self-control is associated with lower levels of Problematic Internet Use, particularly in reducing the tendency to neglect daily responsibilities due to excessive internet use. This study contributes empirical evidence regarding the differential relationship between self-control and each dimension of PIU and provides implications for developing preventive and promotive interventions aimed at fostering healthier internet use among Generation Z.
