Abstract
The development of digital technology and Video on Demand (VoD) services has changed media consumption patterns among Generation Z students. One emerging phenomenon is binge-watching behavior, which is the activity of watching excessive series at one time. This behavior is thought to be related to Fear of Missing Out (FoMO), which is a feeling of anxiety about missing out on information, experiences, and popular social discussions. This study aims to determine the effect of Fear of Missing Out on binge-watching behavior in Generation Z students who use VoD services. This study used a quantitative approach with a purposive sampling technique. The subjects were Generation Z students aged 18–25 who are active users of VoD services and have a habit of watching more than three episodes at a time. The research instrument consisted of a binge-watching scale based on aspects proposed by Flayelle et al. (2019) and a FoMO scale based on aspects of Przybylski et al. (2013). Data analysis was performed using simple linear regression. The results showed that Fear of Missing Out had a positive and significant effect on binge-watching behavior. A correlation coefficient of 0.767 and a determination coefficient of 0.589 indicate that FoMO contributes 58.9% to the tendency to binge-watch. This finding suggests that the higher the level of FoMO experienced by Generation Z students, the higher their tendency to binge-watch as a way to maintain social connectedness in the digital age.
