Abstract

This research explores Dissociative Identity Disorder (GID) from a criminological perspective, analyzing its potential as a triggering factor for criminal acts. GID, characterized by the presence of two or more distinct personality states and recurrent episodes of amnesia, often stemming from severe developmental trauma, presents unique challenges to conventional understandings of criminal intent and responsibility within the legal system. Utilizing a qualitative literature review methodology, this study examines how the internal psychological mechanisms inherent in GID such as the influence of autonomous alter egos, dissociative amnesia obscuring awareness of actions, the potential for trauma re-enactment manifesting as criminal behavior, and impaired judgment or impulse control due to dissociative processes can contribute to the etiology of criminal conduct. The findings indicate that criminal acts perpetrated by individuals with GID may not necessarily emanate from a unified criminal mens rea but rather could be a manifestation of dissociated personality states intricately linked to their traumatic experiences. Consequently, a nuanced comprehension of GID's complex dynamics is crucial for the criminal justice system to facilitate equitable assessments and formulate appropriate interventions when addressing individuals with this disorder.
